Positioned on the west side of the new AC Hotel in San Jose, the new light-based sculpture titled "Phoam" is a paradoxical combination of a free form bubble-like aggregation within a tightly controlled rectangular boundary.  Situated near a heavily trafficked corner, the piece is reflective of its immediate surroundings during the day as hundreds of individual convex surfaces render the cars, buses, and pedestrians that pass along the busy street and freeway intersection nearby.  As the afternoon turns into evening, the illuminated acrylic sculpture transforms from an urban mirror to a softly glowing neighborhood landmark.
