Timbre takes its name from the quality that gives music its color, grain, and voice. The composition is inspired by the circuit boards found inside amplifiers and recording consoles, and by the materials and methods from centuries of instrument craft. Thousands of components are individually formed through laser etching, kerf cutting, and steam bending - the same processes used to build a guitar or a piano. Five wood species form a natural
gradient across thirteen layers, shifting from light to dark. From the side, the piece reads as flat stacked layers. Seen from the front, those layers open into depth as visitors move through the atrium.
